Infiorata di Noto 2022 – A Magnanimous Flower Display in Sicily

What is
InfiorataFlower Carpet Festival 2022 in Italy?
The confluence of Noto flower artists with those from
Genzano, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome, where this graphic
methodology was established, sprouted Infiorata di Noto 40 years ago.
Since 1980, on the third weekend of May, Noto, the
Stone Garden, as historian Cesare Brandi dubbed it, has welcomed an explosion
of colour and aroma in the heart of its ancient town.
Italy’s many regions cherish the amazing Infiorata
celebrations. The word "infiorata" means
"flower-decorated." Flower artisans plan their creations months ahead
of time. They use dried and fresh flower petals, and other organic materials
like beans and wood cuttings, to create basic geometric drawings, exquisite
tapestries, and even magical masterpieces. To make a flower carpet, artists
draw a design on the sidewalk with chalk and then fill it with hundreds of beautiful
petals. Soil or coffee grinds are commonly used to accentuate flower outlines.
Infiorata celebrations are mainly held around the
Corpus Domini feast in late May or early June. The best ceremonies are held in
Noto (Sicily), Genzano (Lazio), and Spello (Umbria), with dates that vary not
only by year but also by locale.
The event's theme varies each year and is
frequently based on religion, mythology, art, or local legend.

The creators who won the contest for the concept of
the floral panels will assume command of one of the 16 sectors given to them in
Via Nicolaci. This takes place on Friday, May 13, and this event will
also mark the beginning of sketching by artists for their future
work using special chalks.
14 May 2022
They'll start covering the sketched design with
flowers cultivated specifically for the event on Saturday, May 14, and continue
until the painting is finished, usually early Sunday morning.
15 May 2022
On the 15thof May, locals and tourists
alike will wait until late in the evening to admire the beautiful mosaic of
petals.
16May 2022
– An Extended Rush of Tourists!
The rush of tourists will continue on Monday i.e., 16th
until the wilting flowers are removed in the evening.
Is there
any entrance fee for Infiorata di Noto 2022?
Yes, for the first time ever, non-residents will need
to pay 2.50 Euros to access the main area of the festival.
For years, the organizers made the event completely
free for all kinds of visitors. However, with the pandemic creating havoc and
increasing costs in almost every country, the organizers were left with no
choice.
According to the councillor, Massimo Prado, “Making money
off visitors is something that we do not do! But due to the event costs,
reception services and other expenses that would cause a huge burden on the
municipal resources, they had to impose a symbolic & nominal fee”
What makes
the Infiorata2022 Event in Sicily Unique?
The 43rd iteration of the Infiorata di
Noto, Nicolaci will take place, marking the 20th anniversary of the Val di
Noto's UNESCO accreditation.
The event has similarities to exactly 1 decade-old
event i.e., in 2012, when the tenth anniversary was commemorated. With a
strange coincidence, the first Infiorata was held in 2012 by the newly
appointed municipal administration led by mayor Corrado Bonfanti, and the
first Infiorata will be held in 2022 by the new administration led by new mayor
CorradoFigura.
