Italy travel Itinerary : Where to travel in Rome, Florence and Venice

Italy is a definite spot for tourism all year round. Right from the ancient wonders of Rome to exploring the architectural marvels of Florence , Italy is home to more Unesco World Heritage sites than any other on Earth. For a place which is a living history lesson. Italy is also one of the world’s contemporary styles. Most notable mentions for places to visit in Italy are from Dante to Verdi to Ferrante toPiano, this place is the birthplace of many generations of explorers of taste and observers of life. When you need to travel to Italy, the only thing you need to do is choose which place to visit to find wonders.

How to reach Italy from UK

There are 9 international airports in the major cities of Italy. Hence there sound no concern for you to catch a direct flight to Italy. However if you are planning something economical and alternative routes like train, there is EuroStar from St Pancras to Paris. Then change to TGV rail in Parict to directly Milan or Turin. This will help you not to cross Germany. However, if you have some errands to run in Germany, then take the Eurostar train  and TGV from St Pancras to Munich and stop overnight. The next morning take an Austrian EuroCity train from Munich to Verona or Venice through the Brenner pass. Then change in Verona for Rome or Florence in Italy.

If you are going by road then drive to either Folkston and take the shuttle to France or go by Ferry from Dover to Calais. From the drive across one of several routes. Route 1 travels towards Paris, from there to Lyon , Geneva and Turin.

Seasons and temperature in Italy

Since most of the people travel to Italy to visit the cities of Rome and Florence and places in central Italy , hence we will focus on the temperatures of Central Italy. In the most crowded tourist area of Rome north to Florence and the rest of Tuscany, you’ll find four distinct seasons. Summers are dry and can be extremely hot, with daytime temperatures in the high 30 degree Celsius and even exceeding 40 degree Celsius. This is why it is best to do your sightseeing in the morning and late afternoon and spend the hottest part of the day relaxing indoors or in the shade.

Winters in this area are generally wet and mild, with temperatures seldom dropping below 0 degree Celsius. You might get some chilly, sunny days, overcast skies are more the possibility. In the eastern, mountainous regions of Abruzzo and Le Marche, summertime temperature may be lower, and winters more severe, with regular snowfall.

How one can move around in the country of Italy

As you are thinking about how to plan your itinerary, the first question you need to ask yourself is how much you want to move around over the course of your trip. Is it possible to stay in one or two places and use Italy’s high speed rail network to do day trips, or do you want to move around more, staying in two or three places.

There are definitely advantages and disadvantages to each approach, but here we prefer the first option i.e. staying in fewer places and doing day trips, because packing up and carrying your stuff every day or two will be very stressful.

Perfect plan for 7 days Italy travel itinerary

Our recommendation is that , don't try to fit more than 2-3 major cities into only a week. Even if you make three places , there’s a lot of ground to cover in 7 days. Hence if you have only 7 days in hand , it would be best to fit Rome, Florence and Venice into one week.

Places to visit in Italy

Rome

With 2 days in Rome which is Italy’s capital, you can explore the grand design of the world’s oldest cities, filled with historic treasures. From history we know that it was the center of politics and power for many years and now the strong structures from these eras live on today as popular tourist attractions.

First Day

Morning

Start your day with a delightful mood at Campo de’ Fiori market. Here you will be greeted by a professional chef. After you’ve picked your ingredients, you will be allowed to go inside the kitchen and learn traditional tips and tricks from the chef. This tour offers a wonderful introduction to Roman cuisine and you can try your new recipes out for friends and family when you return back.

Afternoon

After lunch you can take a stroll to the Spanish Steps or the Pantheon Temple which keeps the tomb of Raphae. Also nearby is the ancient Roman forum, which was once the heart of the Roman Empire and the iconic Trevi Fountain. Then take a more vivid look at magnificent historical sites like the Colosseum.

Evening

If you don't want to leave the city without exploring the Colosseum, you can enjoy a romantic or family dinner and drinks in a beautiful restaurant just on the side of the illuminated structure. Don't forget to taste wine at the local places. Then get some rest for the night in one of Rome’s beautiful hotels.

Day 2

Morning

Wake up early and take a stroll to a local cafe to enjoy an early morning expresso. Then leave for some wineries when it takes you to the heart of Roman wine production and teaches you the secrets behind the local varieties. Then if you prefer to stay in the city , dig into some Roman cuisine restaurants. There is nothing like a large tasty authentic Roman Pizza.

Afternoon

A short walk from Campo de’ Fiori is Castel Sant’ Angelo, an unusual 2nd century cylindrical castle which is accessed via a bridge sculpted with angels. When you cross the river you must see the Vatican city, a Unesco World Heritage site and the smallest country in the whole world. St. Peter’s Square offers breathtaking views of St.Peter’s Basilica, where the Sistine Chapel has Michelangelo’s famous ceiling frescoes.

Evening

As the Evening starts , you must be tired . Hence choose any restaurants in the neighborhood and settle down for some refreshment. Then stop at some local art galleries. And finally head back to the hotel to get some sleep.

And that’s you can end the perfect 2 days in Rome.

Florence

Florence, although it is rich in tourists, it is one of the few cities that has still remained somewhat unspoiled by tourism. Which is why it is always recommended in people’s itinerary.

Day one

Bobooli Gardens

Located across the Arno River, the Giardino di Boboli is a beautiful English style garden on a hillside that was built by the Medici Family. The relaxing ambiance and stillness are the perfect feeling to start your trip to Florence. Then there is Piazzale di Porta Romana, a famous sloping pathway framed by cypress trees.

Villa Bardini Gardens

Just across the Boboli Gardens there are the Villa Bardini Gardens which are much smaller but very beautiful. There’s a wonderful terrace bar at the top where you can catch amazing views of the city. Then even serve beverages and food here.

Pitti Palace

Florence’s largest palace which was once owned by the Medici family is the Pitti Palace, or Palazzo Pitti. The outside architecture doesn't have that wow factor but inside it’s home to five different museums, including the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the palatine Gallery, the Imperial and Royal apartments and the Palatine Chapel on the ground floor.

Ponte Vecchio

This is an iconic old bridge that was built during Roman times to cross the Arno River. The specialty about this bridge is that it is made up of three segmental arches and is lined with overhanging buildings. The buildings were traditionally used as shops , such as butchers and other tradesmen, however today you will find merchants selling jewelers, artwork and of course souvenirs.

 Piazzale Michelangelo

The Piazzale Michelangelo is a square that is located on top of a hill. Walking by foot isn’t that long, but maybe challenging for those who are unfit. Those who make the effort are rewarded with the most extraordinary views of the whole city which have been printed several times in postcards.

Day 2

Academia Gallery

The world famous statue in Florence is the iconic statue of David at Academia Gallery. Up close, you can see every muscle, every vein, every curve of the body. This is why it’s very easy to figure out the world’s most famous works of art.

The Duomo, Baptistery and Bell Tower

The most famous attraction in Florence is the Cathedral de Santa Maria del Fiore, more affectionately known as “The Duomo.” It’s most famous for its dome, known as Brunelleschi’s Dome, which has been decorated with fresco paintings and gilded details on the inside.

Uffizi Gallery

If you have come to Florence to experience its historic ast scene, you cannot skip the Uffizi Gallery. It’s the most renowned gallery in the city and where you can see original pieces from the 14th century Renaissance period’s greatest artists, including Raphael, Botticelli, Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and more.

Piazza della Signoria

Just outside the Uffizi Gallery , there is a bustling square known for its beautiful statues and fountains. The most famous of which is the Fountain of Neptune and a replica of the STatue of David.

Venice

Day 1

Walking Tour

Our recommendation is that after you have checked in for your accommodation , go for a walk and see where you end up. As the city is very windy and full of little streets, figuring out where you’re going is almost impossible. Getting a guided tour is very essential. The benefit of the tour is not only do you get an idea where everything is but you also get the backstory of the buildings and the city too.

Piazza San Marco(St mark’s Square)

Head to St Mark’s Square . It’s the main public square in Venice and is one of the landmarks of venice. The backdrop of St Mark’s clocktower and St Mark’s Basilica are spectacular and you go into the Campanile di San Marco and get a fantastic view from one of the Venetian towers of the square below.

Doge’s Palace

It was the former residence of the Doge of Venice who was the supreme authority of the city. Today it has been converted into a spectacular museum. You can explore lots of exhibitions, the courtyard, see where the Doge lived and visit the prisons and armory. It’s a fascinating experience and one of the best you can do in Venice.

Day 2

Rialto Bridge

Ponte di Rialto also known as Rialto Market is one of the famous bridges in Venice which is located in the San Polo district not far from the Rialto market. If you want a photo on the bridge, it's best to try and get here early to avoid the crowds

Museo Corner

If you want to learn about the history of Venice, Museo Corner is the place to go . The museum is located in St Mark’s Square and is an amazing place to visit . The next stop is the Procuratie Nuove, where you will find some great collections of Venetian art in some of the other rooms, which include works from the earliest collection of Venetian paintings to the 16th century.

Santa Maria Della Salute

Santa Maria della Salute is one of the most beautiful churches in Venice. Its a beautiful octagonal building and is worth checking out as it’s not far from St Mark’s Square and the bell tower

Day 3

Bridge of Sighs

Along with Rialto Bridge and Accademia Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs is one of the most famous bridges in Venice. It connects the Doge’s Palace to the interrogation rooms in the prison across the canal. Again, this is another popular one .

Burano

A venetian Lagoon is one of the islands which is  a Unesco World Heritage site. It’s only a small island, but there are a lot of colorful houses and it is a scenic place. Just walk around and enjoy the beautiful place. The only way to reach there is by a waterbus. It may be one of Venice’s hidden gems as many people have lived here for generations.

Murano

Another small island that is located in the Venetian lagoon is Murano. The water bus takes you straight there from Burano. The island is famous for Murano glass and a museum which details the history of the industry in Murano. There is also one of the oldest churches called Basilica di Santa Maria.
